If you’re thinking of entering the “Shake it Up” Exterior Color Contest, take some tips from a professional color expert.
“The key exterior components of the home --- the roof, energy efficient windows, doors, trim and siding --- are all exceptional ‘color opportunity’ areas for a homeowner to express their personal style,” says Kate Smith, president and chief color maven of Sensational Color. “This fun contest gives people a chance to learn more about color options on home exterior products along with thinking ‘outside of the box’ when it comes to adding color and colorful products to the home.”
Smith will help judge the contest to determine five finalists. She will then work with a professional artist to create renderings and product wish lists of how the five finalists can transform their home’s exteriors by adding colorful products.
The original photo submission and the artist’s renderings for the five finalists will be posted on the contest site for two weeks of online public voting from May 13 – 26, 2013. The finalist with the most votes will be announced and June 3, 2013 and will receive the $5,000 grand prize.
“I like to think ‘from the top down’ when considering color additions on a home,” says Smith. “Start with a blend of colors for the roofing tiles, then work downwards to add colorful accents to the home, such as a painted Classic-Craft® Canvas Collection® or Pulse™ fiberglass door. Next add painted decorative urethane trim accents and colorful vinyl window frames.
“Just imagine a home with a DaVinci Roofscapes slate roof in a European blend of grays and muted burgundy. Then add Decorum® by Simonton windows with a bronze exterior frame and a Therma-Tru® door painted in a welcoming, rich burgundy. Finally, highlight the home with Fypon® louvers, shutters and trim painted in light or medium gray to truly tie-in the entire color theme. That’s a successful way to shake up a home’s exterior!”
